CNB Animal Facility

Facilities

The CNB Animal Facility Service occupies a large part of the basement floor of the building, as well as an adjoining area, physically separated from the central facility, called ZONE S-100, conceived, due to space requirements, as an extension of the Barrier Area, to house the stock of animals generated in the SPF Area of the Animal Facility and with the same characteristics.

The central installation is divided into clearly defined ZONES, as follows:

QUARANTINE AREA which houses two separate areas: an area for Quarantine from Commercial Suppliers and another for animals coming from Imports from other Entities or Laboratories with which Collaborations are established by the Researchers of the Centre.

CONVENTIONAL ZONE in which they are integrated:

Mouse Stock Area (S-90)

Service Area: (Washing and Sterilisation of equipment)

Warehouses and within these the Cesium Irradiator is located.

BARRIER ZONE dedicated to breeding, maintenance and generation of transgenic, knock-out and knock-in animals.

EXPERIMENTAL ZONE (NCB2), is a facility independent from the rest of the Animal Facility, actually it is another animal facility within the total facility, equipped with autoclaves and a washing room independent from the rest of the animal facility, which is where experimental protocols are carried out. Within this area there are several isolators that can be used both to isolate the animals and to increase the level of protection against bacteria, parasites, viruses and to prevent zoonosis.

A diagnostic imaging and X-ray machine (IVIS Lumina XRMS III) capable of providing in vivo bioluminescence and fluorescence imaging with 2D X-ray capability is also available.
