CNB-CSIC animal research

At the National Biotechnology Centre (CNB) we carry out multiple research projects that provide scientific answers to improve the health of people, animals and the environment. Many of these responses do not require the use of animals for experiments, but in some cases their use is crucial.

In these cases, only in vivo models provide answers to diseases such as cancer, vaccines, Parkinson’s disease or bacterial treatments.

Whenever animals are to be used in our centre, prior authorisation from the Community of Madrid is required, provided after an assessment of the harm that may be caused and the benefit to be obtained, explained in a project where the principles of the 3Rs have been taken into account.

Animal models

It is important to consult on the existence of different animal models to avoid producing them in an unjustified way, duplicating efforts and increasing the total number of animals generated for the same purpose. Therefore, it is necessary to review the different databases or catalogues before proceeding to create a new animal model.

This prior consultation also serves to comply with current legislation on animal testing, which reminds us of the need to replace, reduce and refine, following the principles of the 3Rs.
